Our only piano trio this year provides compelling evidence of the creative momentum in London jazz circles, and they've just scooped Best Band at the 2008 BBC Jazz Awards. Formed in 2006, Curios is the pianistic vehicle for Acoustic Ladyland co-founder Tom Cawley, who's joined here by Ronnie Scott's house bassist Sam Burgess and 21 year old drumming sensation Josh Blackmore. The trio's latest CD Closer has drawn fulsome praise in the UK where they've recently opened for Wayne Shorter and appeared on The Culture Show, and the Guardian see them as "world class practitioners in this intricate and intimate genre." Gentle, almost impressionistic originals build their own internal logic, morphing into fertile and exhilarating interaction from an absorbing trio.
