Every year at 12 Points we host the European Jam Session where 12 Points artists can jam with eachother and local musicians. The jam is different each year due to sponteneity, location and musicians so we asked solo trumpeter Hilde Marie Holsen, to give her views on the European Jam Session this year. Hilde got super involved with all aspects of the festival this year from her amazing performance, to her input at the Jazz Futures discussions to making 'scratchy sounds' at the jam. We were delighted to hear about her experience.

"Once you grasped its grammar, the music revealed itself, moving seamlessly between gnarly grooves and loose, open textured freedom, using simple ‘compositions’ - some of them just a few bars long - as starting points for adventures at the outer reaches of music." - Cormac Larkin

"In some countries the big all-star jazz festival is fading, its audience diminishing, while elsewhere, perhaps ironically, perhaps in a connected way, there is a surfeit of festivalisation of culture, in that festival in its ubiquity has become everyday, even banal, and no longer the intense, heightened and exceptional."

"12 Points encourages us to engage with a sense of place, to think about the similarities and differences between people and cultures through music, and to consider the importance of improvisation in art and everyday life."
